NECTAR

Project Overview
Title: The NEgative CO2 emission TrAnsition Roadmap
Addressing climate change may require constructing hundreds to thousands of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies – like direct air capture (DAC) for example – across the United States. Deploying this infrastructure will have environmental and social impacts, but quantifying these impacts is difficult because there are no fine-resolution siting tools for CDR. This project is focused on developing such a tool. Once developed, NECTAR will be able to provide guidance to policy-makers and CDR technology developers on where CDR could be deployed to meet energy transition and climate targets, and what the social and environmental ramifications of this deployment may be. To do this, NECTAR utilizes IDAES to develop process-level models of CDR technologies and couples those results with outputs from other Carbon Solutions tools (e.g., SCO2TPRO) and capacity expansion models. For this project, Carbon Solutions is working with the Electric Power Research Institute and Brad Sparks Consulting.
