Energy applications include CO2 capture and storage, direct air capture, hydrogen, geothermal energy, wind energy, energy storage, air quality co-benefits, and energy equity and environmental justice. We use a range of data analytics and other technical approaches including infrastructure optimization, GIScience, life cycle assessment, technoeconomic assessment, process- and systems-level modeling, machine learning, and policy analysis. The company is fully remote with approximately 30 staff working across the United States.

Job Description: Research Scientist

The Research Scientist will work as a part of a multidisciplinary team creating and implementing interactive software tools that provide decision support for clean energy infrastructure development. The Research Scientist will help manage multi-year U.S. DOE-funded projects, conduct original research, and interact directly with clients. The selected applicant must have excellent communication skills and feel comfortable working in an environment with evolving job responsibilities.

Initially, the Research Scientist will support a Phase II SBIR-funded project (LOCAETA) that is developing an interactive tool for quantifying air quality co-benefits to decarbonization. For this project, the Research Scientist will be expected to:

  • Lead and perform atmospheric dispersion modeling analyses related to industrial air pollution using tools such as AERMOD, Hysplit, CMAQ, etc.
  • Evaluate and quantify air quality co-benefits to decarbonization using public health modeling approaches.
  • Perform model validation, QA, and visualize data and modeling results using tools such as R, Python, Julia, etc.
  • Lead and/or substantially contribute to peer-reviewed scientific publications based off the original research they are conducting with the team.
  • Write code to support team efforts to develop cutting-edge software and data visualization tools on other low-carbon energy projects and software.

Minimum Job Requirements
