Carbon Solutions is hiring a mid-career Research Scientist or Statistician with experience in geospatial data analysis, remote sensing, and machine learning for earth science applications.

Energy applications include CO2 capture and storage, direct air capture, hydrogen, geothermal energy, wind energy, energy storage, air quality co-benefits, and energy equity and environmental justice. We use a range of data analytics and other technical approaches including infrastructure optimization, GIScience, life cycle assessment, technoeconomic assessment, process- and systems-level modeling, machine learning, and policy analysis. The company is fully remote with approximately 30 staff working across the United States.

Job Description: Research Scientist/Statistician (Fully Remote)

The Research Scientist or Statistician will join a multidisciplinary team in creating and implementing interactive software tools that provide decision support for clean energy infrastructure development. The Research Scientist or Statistician will help manage multi-year U.S. DOE-funded projects, conduct original research, and interact directly with clients. The selected applicant must have excellent communication skills and feel comfortable working in an environment with evolving job responsibilities.

Initially, the Research Scientist will support a Phase II SBIR-funded project (LOCAETA) that is developing an interactive tool for quantifying air quality co-benefits to decarbonization. For this project, the Research Scientist will be expected to:

  • Manage, analyze, and visualize geospatial data using tools such as R, Python, Julia, QGIS, etc.
  • Analyze satellite data, e.g., NASA EOS data (MODIS aerosol optical depth, OMI, VIIRS), ESA (Sentinel-5 P, TROPOMI), NOAA Suomi, NOAA GOES, etc., along with other datasets, to understand the impacts of industrial facilities and decarbonization projects on air quality.
  • Perform machine learning analysis to extract information about relationships between remote sensing data and modeling results, using, e.g., neural networks, clustering, XGBoost, or other ML tools.
  • Write code to support team efforts to develop cutting-edge software and data visualization products for both internal and external use.
  • Lead and/or substantially contribute to peer-reviewed scientific publications based off the original research they are conducting with the team.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Degree: A master’s degree plus three years’ experience or PhD in a relevant area such as Geography, Statistics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Earth/Environmental Science, etc. Current students will need to have degrees completed by August 31, 2024.
  • Geospatial background: Demonstrated proficiency with geospatial data analysis through a degree program and/or research, including experience with remote sensing data and machine learning.
  • Coding Proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency in one or more computer languages such as Julia, Python, R, or Matlab.
  • Low-carbon Energy: Passion, experience, and willingness to embrace Carbon Solutions’ mission to address low-carbon energy challenges.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in low-carbon energy, climate, air quality, geology, or environmental science.
  • Experience with GIS software.
  • Experience and potential to work in interdisciplinary teams. 
  • Experience with supporting and writing reports, proposals, and/or scientific papers.
  • Experience or potential to lead major projects.  

Compensation/Benefits

  • Annual Salary: $105k–$125k, depending on experience.
  • 401k retirement plan with company contributions.
